Celebrating a Young Archie Finalist

10 Jun 2025

Shore is delighted to report that Jack D (Year 6), has been selected as a finalist in the Young Archie competition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Jack’s expressive portrait of his grandfather, Graham, an Old Boy of Shore, stood out among more than 3,200 entries submitted by young artists aged 5 to 18 across Australia. Only 70 artworks were chosen for this prestigious shortlist, making Jack’s inclusion a remarkable accomplishment.

The Young Archie competition, held in conjunction with the renowned Archibald Prize, encourages young people to explore portraiture and self-expression through art. Much like the Archibald Prize, which celebrates contemporary portraiture of distinguished Australians, the Young Archie invites entrants to submit portraits of someone significant to them and their life. Jack’s choice to paint his grandfather is a heartfelt tribute, beautifully capturing both emotion and connection through his creative vision.

To celebrate Jack’s achievement, Year 6 students visited the Archibald Prize exhibition, where they had the opportunity to see Jack’s work displayed among some of Australia’s most talented young artists. The visit also offered students the chance to explore the broader Archibald exhibition and gain inspiration from some of the country’s leading professional portrait artists.

We are incredibly proud of Jack, and we congratulate him on reaching this national stage. Well done, Jack!
