Indigenous Family Reconnect Weekend at Shore

26 May 2025

Celebrating Culture and Connection

Last weekend May 16 to 18, Shore was honoured to host our Indigenous Family Reconnect Weekend, an event that brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, students, and members of the wider School community in a celebration of culture, connection and shared stories. The weekend reflected Shore’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and our dedication to walking together with respect, understanding and purpose.

The weekend began on Friday with a lunchtime yarning session, where families joined our Koori Club alongside Mr Braydon Mundy, Shore’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Support Mentor, and cultural consultant Mr Gene Ross, a proud Dharawal saltwater man born on Gadigal Land. Together, we took time to introduce ourselves, share personal stories, and reflect on the continued development of Shore’s Indigenous programme. This was followed by a warm and informal afternoon tea with the Executive Leadership Team, Boarding staff and key members of the Shore community. This gathering offered an opportunity to build meaningful connections and strengthen the partnerships that support our students. The day concluded with a relaxed BBQ dinner, where boarders, day students, families and Indigenous programme staff came together to enjoy each other’s company in a spirit of inclusion and community.

Saturday was marked by the celebration of the Indigenous Rounds of both rugby and soccer. Luke (Year 12) opened both fixtures with a moving Acknowledgement of Country, followed by an address from Dr Collier, who recognised the important role our Indigenous families play in the life of the School.

Players across all Shore rugby teams wore Indigenous socks, and our First, Second, and Third XV Rugby and First and Second XI Soccer teams proudly took the field in jerseys designed by Shore students, each one a symbol of cultural pride and unity.

The Indigenous Family Reconnect Weekend continues to be a highlight of the School calendar as an opportunity to deepen relationships, celebrate culture, and affirm our shared commitment to reconciliation. We thank all families and community members who took part and contributed to the strength and spirit of the event.
