George Smith Greenwell Library Redevelopment

16 Jul 2026

At Shore, we believe strongly in nurturing each boy’s curiosity, character, and love of learning during the formative Prep years.

This is reflected in our Strategic Direction 2025–2027, where we commit to building the foundations for a thriving future, including future-focused facilities and infrastructure.

We are pleased to share the next step in this commitment through proposed works for the redevelopment of the George Smith Greenwell Library at the North Sydney Preparatory School campus. This project represents the first stage of the School’s long‑term Campus Renewal Plan and a significant investment in learning for boys in Years 3 to 6.

The existing library holds a special place within our community. Established in 1958 in memory of Shore student George Smith Greenwell, it stands as a lasting tribute to courage, service, and character. The redevelopment honours this legacy while creating a contemporary library that supports the evolving learning needs of Prep boys.

The new library will provide:

  • A purpose‑designed space that strengthens literacy, inquiry and independent learning.
  • A centrally located, welcoming hub at the heart of the Prep campus.
  • Flexible, developmentally appropriate environments designed specifically for boys.
  • Improved supporting facilities, including classrooms, music learning spaces and valuable undercover play and gathering areas including an all-weather outdoor play space.

The project also responds thoughtfully to changing enrolment patterns. It enables the School to accommodate our students without compromising space, amenity, or the quality of the Prep experience.

Importantly, the redevelopment is being delivered in partnership with the Shore Foundation, reflecting our shared commitment to providing exceptional learning environments for current and future boys.

We recognise that building projects can prompt questions, particularly around timing and logistics. The School has undertaken a comprehensive planning and design process and will continue to communicate clearly with families as the project progresses, with a strong focus on minimising disruption during the Prep school day.

We look forward to sharing further updates and thank our families for their ongoing support of Shore and its future.
