On Saturday 21 October, Shore School was approached to assist with the preparation and recovery of Australian test cricketers Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. The Aussies needed the preparation time and due to a lack of wickets available throughout Sydney approached the school for an opportunity to spend valuable time in the middle as part of a planned recovery session.

The Shore 2nd XI was more than happy to postpone the start time of their trial with The Scots College by 1 hour to allow Smith the opportunity to test his injured shoulder facing the pace of Hazlewood, Starc and Doug Bollinger, who also participated, and the spin of Lyon. The Shore 2nd XI and The Scots College teams shared the fielding duties, enjoying the time up close and personal with some of Australia’s best cricketers.

Steve Smith started his innings in scratchy fashion, bothered by Bollinger and Hazlewood and was even caught by Remi Bertini off Bollinger. Soon after, another sharp chance was dropped by coach Siddall at 2nd slip off the unlucky Bollinger. After spending some time becoming accustomed to the conditions on A Ground, Smith launched 3 big sixers onto B and D ground that impressed the crowd.

The Shore Cricket fraternity wish our cricketers the very best for the upcoming Ashes series.
