After lighting up Shore’s basketball court during his time at the school, 2019 alumnus Patrick Fraser will be taking his talents to the United States after winning a prized basketball scholarship to the University of Nebraska-Kearny. Drafted in June, following a successful last season at Shore and the North Reps (NSW) team, Patrick will move to the US in August to start his preparation for the 2020-2021 American College basketball season. Immersed in sport from a young age and following in the footsteps of his mother, an Irish basketball international, Patrick has never held back from showing his own talent on the court. “I love the competitive nature of basketball and the way that the sport’s youth development pathway puts you up against some of the best athletes in the world,” Patrick says. Winning a scholarship to study and join the team, he is moving for his chance at playing in an esteemed competition. While hoping to play for Australia one day, Patrick says his move to Nebraska and play the sport he is passionate about in an highly-regarded College competition felt right. “When I saw Nebraska it felt like home. I can’t wait to start working on my degree and aiming for the highest representation Nebraska has to offer in basketball,” Patrick says. Although Covid-19 has meant Patrick has not been able to explore the Nebraska campus, he is in fighting shape for his move after a tough home training regime and many hours spent on the basketball court in his backyard. He says there is no need to worry about his talents being lost to Australia permanently. “I hope to come home and play professional basketball and represent Australia in the future, but I’m keen to focus on my degree first.”
