Last week Year 9 student, Rohan Stannage, was recognised for his outstanding efforts in sailing, receiving a Local Sporting Champion Grant from Mr Trent Zimmerman, Federal Member for North Sydney.

Rohan started sailing in Tackers Learn to Sail at Hunters Hill Sailing Club in 2013 as an 8 year old, and went on to compete in regattas around the world. Graduating to skippering a Flying 11 dinghy at Nationals, he learned about team work, and enjoyed the speed that came with a three sailed boat. He went on to compete at the 2018 World Cup Series in Miami, winning the accolade of ‘Most Improved’ with his crew Stella Hurley.

RohanStannage3Rohan now sails an incredibly fast Nacra 15 catamaran, and is member of the NSW Youth Sailing Team. He commented: “I am really lucky to be in the NSW Youth Sailing Team, we get coached by some awesome sailors, my learning curve is super steep and fun! When I get older and bigger I will go into the Nacra 17 (the Olympic catamaran) and maybe a SailGP or America’s Cup team if I’m good enough!”

This year Rohan (and his team member Bella), the youngest and lightest team in Australia, finished 10th at the Australian titles, and 9th in the Australian Youth Titles, placing in the top 5 on several occasions.

Rohan’s Dad, Chris, shared: “We feel that sailing has been, and remains, a wonderful developer of character, resilience and self-assuredness. It rewards preparation, concentration and courage, and is, of course, incredible fun!”

After receiving the Local Sporting Champion Grant, Rohan said: “I was delighted and honoured to receive the Grant, support like that is invaluable, and it was great to meet other young athletes from gymnastics, orienteering, athletics and some other sailors.”

About the Grant

The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative which provides funding assistance to young sportsmen and women who are participating in a state, national or international sporting competition.

The Local Sporting Champions grant can contribute towards the cost of travel, accommodation, equipment and/or uniforms for the nominated sporting competition.
