Star Shore basketballer wins scholarship to University of Idaho

After lighting up the courts at Shore, recent HSC graduate Hunter Madden has been recognised for his prodigious basketball talent, winning a scholarship to study at the University of Idaho in the United States and play for its team, the Vandals.

Hunter will travel to the US in [September] to commence his studies and prepare for the 2020-2021 Vandals season.

The promising Sydney Kings junior impressed University of Idaho scouts with his positive energy and offensive playmaking abilities.

“The University is looking for players who can make an impact early in the season and I think I have something to offer given the competition they’re playing in,” Hunter said.

“Idaho has given me a chance and I can’t wait to get over there and start playing. I’m really looking forward to contributing to the Vandals,” he said.

Hunter is no stranger to the basketball courts, starting from a young age after school with his grandfather and school mates, and soon becoming addicted to the fun and thrill of the court. Over the years Hunter’s talent only blossomed, culminating in his leading scoring, rebounds and assists in his last season at Shore.

Though a trip to visit his new college campus in April was delayed due to Covid-19, Hunter says this will not hinder his preparation.
“I’ve been working hard at staying in shape and have been training every day, skipping and dribbling in the backyard and practising shooting in the local park,” said Hunter.

“I want to hit the ground running in Idaho with both basketball and my studies.”

“We will see where it takes me, but hopefully in four years an opportunity with the pro teams will come along. Every basketballer dreams of playing in the NBA and someday I definitely would love to do that. I also dream of seeing myself in green and gold, representing Australia alongside other amazing players.”
