Each year Shore offers Scholarships in the following categories. All scholarship holders are expected to display academic progress commensurate with their ability and to take a full and constructive part in the life of the School in the areas of their interests, aptitudes and abilities.

Shore Scholarships are only available to Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Academic

Academic Scholarships are awarded each year to a number of boys entering Year 7. These Scholarships are awarded to boys considered to have exceptional academic potential, who will benefit substantially by attending the school, and who will in turn make a significant contribution to the academic life of the School. Factors other than purely academic potential may be taken into account. The Scholarships are allocated after the completion of the ACER CSTP Scholarship examination and an interview with the Headmaster and Director of Studies.

Means-related

Two means-related Scholarships and two occasional means-related Scholarships are available each year for entry to Year 7. They are awarded to boys who would otherwise not be able to attend Shore, who apply considerable effort to their studies and who will contribute significantly to co-curricular activities within the School. Candidates for means-related scholarships are required to sit the ACER exam.

Boarding

There are a number of boarding scholarships and bursaries available for entry to Year 7 and also for those already boarding at Shore for Years 11 and 12. Most of these are means tested and candidates may be required to sit the ACER examination. Music

Music Scholarships are awarded subject to an audition and interview, along with demonstrated academic performance. Music Scholarship applicants are not required to sit the ACER examination. Please note that not all applications for Music scholarships will receive an audition.

Applications for Music Scholarships close on 3 February 2023.  Auditions will be held on 1 March 2023.

Registration

Online registrations for the ACER Scholarship Exam can be made from 27 September 2022. Pen and paper registrations are not accepted. Please refer to the ACER website and follow instructions carefully before registering. All supporting documentation (application forms, portfolios and financial information) for means-related Scholarships must be received by 25 February 2023.

The registration fee is $110 (including GST).

Please register via Acer Scholarships.

The online registration system will be closed at midnight AEDST on Monday 6 February 2023. No late registrations will be permitted.

Exam

The examination will be held at the School in the War Memorial Hall building which is close to the Blue Street entrance on Saturday 25 February 2023 from 9.00am - 12.30pm. Candidates must report by 8.45 am. There will be intervals between the tests and boys should bring something to eat and drink in this period. All candidates must bring two HB or B pencils, an eraser, a ruler and two blue or black pens. School uniform is not required to be worn. No parking is available on School grounds, however meter parking is available in the surrounding streets.

Shore makes no provision for walk-in candidates on the day of the exam, and no late arrivals will be admitted.

Most of the Scholarships are named after members of the School community who have made outstanding contributions to the School in a variety of ways over a long period of time.

The Scholarships

Academic - Entry to Year 7

A portfolio of the candidate's academic achievements and interests will be requested prior to interview. Full and half scholarships will be offered dependent upon a boy’s results in the ACER Scholarship examination and subsequent interview.

1. The W A Purves Scholarship (Open)

Restricted to boys from outside the School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after W A Purves, MA (Oxon). Headmaster of Shore 1910 - 1922.

2. The C M Hodges Scholarship (Open)

Open to boys from outside the School and from the Shore Preparatory School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after C M Hodges, MA (Oxon). Headmaster of Shore 1900 - 1910.

3. The L C Robson Scholarship (Open)

Open to boys from outside the school and from the Shore Preparatory School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after L C Robson, CBE, MC, MA (Oxon), BSc (Syd). Headmaster of Shore 1923-1958.

4. The E I Robson Scholarship (Open)

Open to boys from outside the school and from the Shore Preparatory School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after E I Robson, BA (Cantab), MA (Melb). Headmaster of Shore 1889 - 1900.

5. Open Scholarship

Open to boys from outside the school and from the Shore Preparatory School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. This Scholarship will be known by one of the following titles, chosen in succession:

The Christina Campbell Scholarship
In acknowledgement of the bequest received in 1936 under the will of the late Mrs Christina Campbell;
The Oswald Stanton-Cook Scholarship
In acknowledgement of the bequest received in 1954 under the will of the late Oswald StantonCook;
The Grainger Exhibition
Founded in 1937 under the will of the late Edwin Thiery Grainger;
The Netherby Graham Exhibition
Founded in 1950 under the will of the late Charles Graham as a memorial to his late son, an Old Boy, who lost his life in the War of 1914-18;
The Council Junior Scholarship
Founded by the Council of the School to enable a boy of academic capacity to attend the School in order to provide academic leadership;
The Bishop Barry Scholarship
Named after Bishop Alfred Barry, MA, DD, DCL in recognition of his lifelong work in the interests of Church of England Schools and in particular his role in the founding of Shore.

6. The James March Hardie Scholarship (Open)

Open to boys from outside the School and from the Shore Preparatory School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after James March Hardie, a significant benefactor of the School.

7. The J H and A G Dixon Scholarship (Occasional, Open)

Awarded in some years to a boy entering the School. Of value equal to one third of annual fees each year for the six years of normal secondary schooling. Named after J H Dixon, School Sergeant Major 1948-1971, and Mrs A G Dixon.

8. The R G H Walmsley Scholarship (Closed)

Restricted to boys who have attended the Shore Preparatory School for one year or longer. Of value equal to 50% tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after R G H Walmsley BA (Oxon). On staff 1901-1945. Master of the Preparatory School and Housemaster, Purves House, 1928-1938. Organist 1908-1915, and Choirmaster.

 

9. The Peter & Dorothy Jenkins Scholarship (Open)

Open to boys from outside the School. This scholarship is of value equal to 25% of tuition fees for the first two years of secondary schooling. The continuation of the scholarship into its second year is subject to a successful review at the end of Year 7.

Means-Related - Entry to Year 7

1. The K G Smith Scholarship (A Shore Foundation Scholarship)

Awarded to a boy who might not otherwise be able to attend Shore because of economic circumstances and who is likely to significantly benefit from and contribute positively to the life of the School, both inside and outside the classroom. Successful candidates must perform to a high academic standard and contribute significantly to co-curricular activities within the School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling.
Named after Mr K G Smith, a former President of the Shore Foundation and a significant benefactor of the school over a number of years.

Parents wishing to apply for Means-Related Scholarships should complete FORM A - Expression of Interest (Means-related Scholarships), forward it to Ms Lee Ducrou, Scholarships Office, Shore School, PO Box 1221, North Sydney, 2059. Please include a portfolio containing your son's achievements and interests, and register for the ACER exam.

2. The E R & G L Hawkins Scholarship (A Shore Foundation Scholarship)

Awarded to a boy who might not otherwise be able to attend Shore because of economic circumstances and who is likely to significantly benefit from and contribute positively to the life of the School, both inside and outside the classroom. Successful candidates must perform to a high academic standard and contribute significantly to co-curricular activities within the School. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling or shared depending on the candidature. The Hawkins Scholarship has been provided by the generosity of the family of Mr Garrick Hawkins and in memory of his mother and father. Mr Hawkins is an Old Boy of Shore, a former member of the Shore Foundation Board of Trustees and a significant benefactor to the School. His generosity over a number of years was acknowledged by the School Council in 1994, when the Hawkins Foyer in the Centenary Building was named for the Hawkins Family.

Parents wishing to apply for Means-Related Scholarships should complete FORM A - Expression of Interest (Means-Related Scholarships) and return it to Ms Lee Ducrou, Scholarships Office, Shore School, P.O. Box 1221, North Sydney, 2059.

3. Peter F Conway Bursary

A yearly, means-related Bursary is available for sons of full time approved non-ordained Christian workers to attend Shore School. The Bursary is awarded to a boy who might not otherwise be able to attend Shore because of economic circumstances. The Bursary is for entry into Year 7, but entry into other secondary years may be possible according to family circumstance. Of value equal to up to 60% of tuition fees for the normal six years of schooling. It is expected that the recipient will apply consistent and considerable effort to their studies and will contribute significantly to co-curricular activities within the School. Named after Mr Peter Conway, an Old Boy of the School 1965-1970 and former teacher at the School between 1974 and 1979. After an extensive academic career in the United States, he has maintained a close interest in education from a Christian perspective. 

Please complete FORM B - Expression of Interest (Peter Conway Bursary), forward it to the Scholarships Office with a portfolio containing your son's achievements and interests, and register for the ACER exam.

4. The James Family Bursary (Occasional)

An occasional, means-related Bursary is available to a boy who might not otherwise be able to attend Shore because of economic circumstances, and who is likely to significantly benefit from and contribute to the life of the School, both inside and outside the classroom. Of value equal to up to 50% tuition fees for the normal six years of schooling. It is expected that the recipient will apply consistent and considerable effort to their studies and will contribute significantly to co-currricular activities within the School. The James Family Bursary has been generously provided on behalf of the James Family by Shore past parents Bill & Elizabeth James whose sons Andrew and Richard attended Shore.

Please complete FORM C - Expression of Interest (James Family Bursary), forward it to the Scholarships Office with a portfolio containing your son's achievements and interests, and register for the ACER exam.

Boarding

The Peter Blaxland Scholarship - Boarding (A Shore Foundation Scholarship)

This Scholarship is for a boy to attend Shore as a fulltime boarder. The successful applicant's parents must reside outside the County of Cumberland. It is awarded to a boy who might not otherwise be able to attend Shore as a boarder because of economic circumstances and who is likely to significantly benefit from and contribute positively to the life of the School, both inside and outside the classroom. Successful candidates must make a consistent effort academically and contribute significantly to co curricular activities within the School. Of value equal to full tuition and boarding fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling or shared depending on the candidature. The Peter Blaxland Scholarship has been provided by the generosity of Dr Peter D Blaxland, Old Boy of Shore 1935-1937 and distinguished surgeon and yachtsman.

Parents wishing to apply for the Peter Blaxland Scholarship should complete FORM D - The Peter Blaxland Scholarship and return it to Ms Lee Ducrou, Scholarships Office, Shore School, P.O. Box 1221, North Sydney, 2059.

Country Boarders Fund – The 385 Bursary (A Foundation Scholarship)

This means-tested bursary is open to boys outside the School and provides support for rural families to send their sons to Shore as Senior School Boarders. Applications are invited throughout the year and the amount of the award is flexible, dependent on individual circumstances. It is primarily designed to help families with a high desire to attend Shore, and enter in Year 7, but may need some financial assistance for the total investment. This bursary is awarded to boys who have applied considerable effort to their studies and who will contribute significantly to co-curricular activities within the School. Candidates are not required to sit the ACER exam however school reports will be required.

Music

1. The RAI Grant Music Scholarship

The RAI Grant Music Scholarship, provided by the Shore Foundation, is awarded as a full scholarship every year to a student who is highly proficient on an orchestral instrument. Scholarship applicants should have reached the following minimum levels: Strings - Grade 7, Woodwind and Brass - Grade 5. This Scholarship provides an opportunity for a boy entering Year 7 with outstanding musical talent to attend Shore and to provide leadership in music and in his area of specialisation. The scholarship will be awarded subject to an audition and interview, along with demonstrated academic performance. In the consideration of the award of this scholarship, it is not necessary for a boy to have sat the ACER Scholarship examination. Of value equal to full tuition fees for the normal six years of secondary schooling. Named after RAI Grant, BEc (Syd), BEd (Melb), DipEd (UNE). Headmaster of Shore 1984-2002.

Parents wishing to apply for the RAI Grant Music Scholarship should complete Form F - R A I Grant Music Scholarship application form and include the applicants’ most recent school report and music reference from principal instrument tutor. The completed application form, report and reference should be returned to the Performing Arts Secretary, Shore School, P.O. Box 1221, North Sydney, 2059.

2. The Merewether Music Scholarship

The Merewether Music Scholarship, covering up to 50% of academic tuition fees, will be awarded for entry to Year 7, giving preference to a boy with outstanding ability in playing French Horn or Percussion, however other orchestral instrumentalists are invited to apply. Guidelines for skill levels required: Orchestral Brass- AMEB Grade 4; Woodwind – AMEB Grade 5; Strings – AMEB Grade 6; Orchestral Percussion - skills on both tuned and untuned instruments required. Note-reading essential. This Scholarship was established by John Merewether and family in memory of Richard Merewether who was an Old Boy of Shore 1937-1943, French Horn player, entrepreneur, designer, writer and director of Paxman Horns, London. The scholarship is intended to assist and encourage music scholars and performers, particularly of the French Horn and Percussion.

Not being offered in 2024.

3. Organ Scholarship

A scholarship for Pipe Organ is available for entry to Year 7. The scholarship will cover 25% of academic tuition fees plus organ lessons. Applicants for the Organ Scholarship will have reached a 4th Grade AMEB (or equivalent) level in piano or organ, and will demonstrate a commitment to pursuing the study of the organ as their first instrument.
Applicants for the Organ Scholarship will attend an audition and interview. (Pianists presenting for organ scholarships, with little or no experience on organ, may audition on piano). Please complete Form G -  Shore Foundation Organ Scholarship and include the applicants’ most recent school report and music reference from applicants principal instrument tutor. The completed application form, report and reference should be returned to the Performing Arts Secretary, Shore School, P.O. Box 1221, North Sydney, 2059.
