Mr John SD Kenny ('22) Receives Commendation for Brave Conduct

01 Sep 2025

Shore are proud to share that Mr John SD Kenny ('22) has been awarded a Commendation for Brave Conduct, as announced today in the Australian Bravery Decorations Honours List by the Governor-General of Australia.

Mr Kenny’s courageous actions in 2019, while still a student at Shore, have now been formally recognised. At just 15 years old, he stood up to protect a busload of 12-year-old Shore boys returning from rowing training, after an incident that escalated far beyond a simple road accident. His calm, protective response in the face of aggression was described by the Magistrate as the act of a true hero:

“In the video we see a coward and a hero. A hero who stood up, not to confront but to calm the situation and look after others... If I was the school, or the father, or the mother I would be very proud of this young man who did what was right.”

The Governor-General’s announcement echoed this sentiment, stating:

“The exceptional people we honour today answered a call to defend and protect with unforeseen courage... We deeply thank and pay respect to these remarkable, brave Australians who will always have our enduring gratitude and admiration.”

The Australian Bravery Decorations are part of the Australian Honours System, recognising individuals who selflessly risk their own safety to protect others. Mr Kenny’s actions exemplify the values of courage, compassion, and leadership that we strive to instil in our students.

Now 21, Mr Kenny is studying Commerce and Engineering at the University of Sydney.

This commendation is not just a recognition of one brave act, but a reminder of the impact one person can have when they choose to stand up for others. Congratulations, Mr Kenny.
