Boarding at SHORE

Introduction to Boarding at Shore

Shore has always been committed to being a boarding school and its boarders are represented strongly, well beyond their proportion, in the academic, leadership and co-curricular life of the School.  Boarding at Shore is enjoying a renewed boom with places being highly sought after for both full and weekly boarding across all Years.

There has and continues to be impressive refurbishment of the School's four boarding houses and another positive recent development has been having the junior boarders start out in School House in their modern and friendly dormitories.  This allows the boys to be together in Year 7 which assists them to forge strong friendships.  In Year 8 boys will either remain in School House or move to either Barry, Hodges or Robson Houses.

As a mark of the School's dedication to boarding and the Headmaster, Boarding Housemasters and Registrar have travelled extensively throughout New South Wales promoting our excellent boarding facilities, the structured routine and study times, the academic assistance and the awareness of the strong friendship bonds available to Shore boarders.

In the past two years, functions have been hosted in Dubbo, Young, Newcastle, Mudgee, Bourke, Walcha, Quirindi and Cowra.  At these gatherings Shore Boarding Housemasters, current parents, Old Boys including former boarders meet with prospective families, who are seeking either immediate or longer term enrolments.  These promotions are not only informative with regards to the School's current and future developments but they ensure boarding will remain a vital part of the life of Shore well into in the future.

The Boarding Environment

The four Shore boarding houses provide a warm and caring family atmosphere for both Primary and Secondary boarders.

The School provides an environment where boys can develop to their full potential as individuals and as members of the boarding community.

Boys are under the close guidance of the Housemaster and his family, and Assistant Housemasters. All Housemasters are members of the teaching staff and are fully involved in the School Programme.

In all four Houses, School, Robson, Barry, and Hodges, emphasis is placed on the wholesome, all round development of sound study habits and personality.

The vertical arrangement of boys from junior to senior boarders in each house encourages boarders to care for and to consider each other and to appreciate the values inherent in an education at Shore. Through this structure senior boys provide supportive leadership of younger boys.

The modern boarding house facilities include comfortable rooms for the boys with adequate space for private studyThe boarding house facilities are modern and are designed to provide increasing levels of privacy as the boys become more independent and mature. Senior boarders are provided with single bed-sitters to allow them to maximise their academic study time.

Boarders’ facilities also include common rooms and recreation areas for relaxation. In addition to assistance which is available from resident staff, in the evenings qualified academic tutors visit each House to help boys with homework and revision of their school work. Tutorials are provided over a range of  subjects for small groups of boys or on an individual basis.

Boarders have access to the facilities and resources of the School after hours and at weekends. These include the Design and Technology workshops (woodwork, metal work, and automotive workshop), the School Library, the Computer Centre and the Music practice rooms.

A Supportive and Caring Community

The boarders of Shore are a key group of students whose presence in the School is both respected and enjoyed by the wider Shore community. All four Houses are situated on the main North Sydney campus providing boarders with convenient access to all the School’s academic, cultural and sporting centres. They are located adjacent to the School Chapel allowing them to worship together with the members of the boarding house families on Sundays.

The boarders in each house enjoy combined boarding activities and also have social and cultural exchanges with boarders from other boys and girls schools.
