The Shore Foundation Mission
The mission of The Shore Foundation is to facilitate and foster the growth and development of Shore as an independent School of excellence. The Shore Foundation
Sydney Church of England Grammar School was opened in 1889. Known as Shore, today the School has grown from a small body of 24 boys in its first year to over 1,500 today. This growth has required new facilities not only to meet increased numbers but to cater for the broadening of the NSW Curriculum and the School's co-curricular activities. In order to meet these needs, the School has conducted numerous fund-raising activities. These appeals were originally managed by the School Council, already very busily involved in overseeing the management of the School. Then in the 1970's, the School Council decided to establish The Shore Foundation, to be given two main goals which are stated in its Memorandum and Articles of Association.
- Firstly, to conduct the fund raising necessary to help finance building projects as decided by the Council; and
- Secondly, to endow the School with a capital fund.
The Shore Foundation was registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee on the 19th November 1976 and is today managed by a Board of Directors.
The current President of Shore Foundation is William Pulver, who is an Old Boy and current parent. The Board includes the Chairman of Council, the Headmaster, President of the Old Boys Union and the President of the Shore Association. The Executive Director is Peter Murphy who is an Old Boy. There is a mixture of Old Boys and current and past parents amongst the 12 Directors.
The establishment of the Foundation has relieved the Council of fund raising responsibilities, although it is stressed the Foundation's Board conducts a number of programmes and appeals, each managed by a sub-Committee. The Foundation's drive for funds in the last financial year resulted in total income exceeding $2.25 million and total grants to the school were $1.19 million.
The Foundation is an arm of the Council, assisting it to develop a strong financial base for the future well being of the School. Its success is very dependent on receiving support from the School Community. This includes volunteers to assist with the implementation and conduct of its programmes. Shore will only be as financial secure as its Community makes it.
As Peter Taylor quoted in his book 'A Celebration of Shore', 'Shore is constantly in need of donations, gifts and bequests so that development can be continued and facilities improved. There is no end, no finality in the development of a School such as Shore one can only hope that those associated with Shore now and in the future, will be as generous as those in the past'.
